a mother’s day gift
- nathan
Today is Mother’s Day. The rest of the family is meeting for lunch to honor the moms. I will not be attending, because I’m in the hospital.
On Thursday, Raegan & I both had General Tso’s Chicken for lunch. I ate all of mine, and she took hers home and finished it later in the afternoon. Around 4 pm, I started feeling bad, like I had eaten *way* too much. I decided to lay down and sleep it off. At 7 pm I headed to the bathroom and vomitted. I thought that would make me feel better, but I was still in pain. I ended up vomitting 5 or 6 more times, and got to the point where I couldn’t really lay down.
Raegan went to get me pepto-bismol, and when she got home I was curled up in a ball at the foot of the bed moaning and holding my stomach. Raegan then ordered me to the emergency room.
Within 30 minutes of being admitted to the ER, the doctors determined that I had Pancreatitus. The number one cause of this in North America is binge drinking. So they started lecturing me about binge drinking. It wasn’t until they looked at my blood work that they realized my pancreatitus was not caused by alcohol, but was caused by Diabetes.
Sometime in the past year or two I developed Diabetes. This caused my triglycerides level to go way up, which caused my pancreas to work overtime. It finally tossed up its hands and stopped working. So I’m in the hospital now, on a strict diet of ice chips only (no water, food, anything) until my pancreas settles down. there’s no medicine they can give me to speed up the process, so it’s pretty much a waiting game.
Medicine has progressed to the point that I can manage my Diabetes very well, just taking a couple pills a day (no bigger than sesame seeds!) and keeping on top of my blood sugar. All in all, I think I will be ok.
Raegan has stayed with me pretty much 24/7. She’s currently laying on the little sofa in my room, trying to get some sleep. She is really a gift from God.
If you want to come visit, I’m in room 441 at Sentara Careplex off of Hampton Roads Center Parkway. But if you could keep me in your prayers I would appreciate it.

You are definitely in my (and Jen’s) prayers. Do you have an expected discharge date yet?

No expected discharge date yet. I suspect it’ll be the end of the week, maybe Thursday. But it all depends on when my pancreas wants to start processing food again.

that’d be fine with me, but the hospital food is really bad. it’d have to be BYOFF or something.
