I must start by saying that I really enjoy my new job. The pay is great, hours are good, they’re flexible, the work is bearable, etc. Good stuff. However, there is one significant downside. The parking lot is dangerous.

I work with maybe 500 people who do not care a thing about driving safely. Imagine every piece of parking lot etiquette you remember. I bet I can provide an example where they are all broken. I have seen people driving through the empty spots to avoid the speed bumps. I have been nearly hit by two of them, driving across the lanes without looking. The parking spots are diagonal, and people back in all the time, driving against the arrows. They speed, turn left from the right lane (when I was in the left lane, about to pull out), they cut across the main lane without looking, etc. It’s horrible. Raegan has nearly been in half a dozen accidents where she dropped me off, then had people zoom around her on the left, cutting front of her and turning right into a parking spot. It’s difficult to describe, but just imagine horrendous driving and you’ll get it.

I’m no stranger to driving. I spent years on the road, driving up and down I-95 more times than I’d like to admit. I’ve sped, and I’ve had speeding tickets. I know what reckless driving is, with more reckless tickets than I care to admit. I can relate to speeders, having been one for so long. I’m not trying to excuse my behavior, simply disclosing it. But when it comes to parking lots, I have always thought that a certain degree of caution was called for. I mean, people are walking there. I’d hate to hit someone. But the people here really don’t seem to care.

I have never seen such a concentrated amount of poor drivers. I am curious about what to do. I’m tempted to get a beater and not stop for the idiots. Maybe wear a helmet or something… Any suggestions?

Oh, the one lady I confronted about it had this to say, “Did I hit you? Did I hit you? No? Well then it’s all ok.” Simply amazing.

I installed MZ-Tools 3.0, an add-in for Visual Basic 6.0. Yes, I know we’re at least 3 versions beyond VB6, but some of us have to maintain these applications…

Anyway, it has a bunch of nifty features, and it’s free, so I recommend everyone go get it if you have to maintain any significant VB6 projects.
