the joys of maintenance programming
We had a “programmer” who built this nifty application that is critical to our company’s daily operations. She did a bad job of it though, and it’s a very brittle application. If people don’t do things exactly right, the application will blow up and say bad things about their grandmother. Very nasty little app.
So this “programmer” announces her resignation, and I’m left to support her stuff. *sigh* So right now I’m setting up her project in source control (subversion), which basically keeps track of all the changes you make to anything, and let’s you go back to previous version. I just installed Tortoise SVN, as I like it better than Ankh, which I had been using for my stuff.
This is a pretty big app, so it’s taking a long time to import into source control. I guess I didn’t need to import all these binary files, but *shrug* you can never be too careful.
I just came across this thread on JoelOnSoftware. My problem isn’t quite like that, but it’s similar. I actually have a copy of Death March by Yourdon… I need to go dig that up.

strange
Oddly enough, for some reason I’m craving a cupcake. The kind you had in 3rd grade when someone had a birthday and they brought in 12 cupcakes in a cardboard 24-pack soda container.

changes
My boss (CIO of the company) just announced his last day would be May 27. ack! This is a crazy time for him to be resigning, and makes me wonder about my future here. First of all, I wonder who will take over for him. Our reviews are in July, and it seems rough to have someone give me a performance review after just 2 months. *sigh* He said he’s going to Arkansas where his family is. That’s cool, and I certainly understand that desire.
In the meantime, this puts things in quite a state of flux here. Not sure what will happen with the large projects we have going on. I was planning to ask him if I could work from home - I think this might be a time to do that. He probably won’t care, and if I can get my stuff moved out of here before the new guy takes over, then I might be home free.
Very interesting things are afoot here at my company. He’s meeting with his boss (COO of the company) right now, telling him the news. I suspect he will try to get him to stay. Sounds like he made up his mind though.
Leadership in other areas of my life have also been changing. We just had a new pastor put in place last night at Grace Fellowship. Bill Oden passed the mantle to Clay Hudson. It was very cool to see. The past month has been rough for me, as Clay has been the acting pastor. I wasn’t comfortable treating him as pastor, and I didn’t really understand why. He’s a good guy, and I admire him, but I couldn’t think of him as pastor. Now I understand why. The authority had not transitioned to Clay yet. Even though Clay was preaching, doing the bulletin, sitting on the front row, etc, he wasn’t my covering. Bill, along with some other pastors, prayed for Clay and set him in as the pastor. Then Bill prayed that the anointing on his pastoral ministry at Grace would pass to Clay. No fire came down from heaven, but in my spirit I knew this was what I was waiting for.
I went up to Clay afterwards and said, “hi, pastor!” He said that sounded good, and it sounded good to me too. Bill is now my friend, not my authority or my covering. Very similar to a military changing of command. I think good things are in store. Stay tuned.

Bob the builder
Raegan and I replaced our kitchen faucet last night. It was pretty darn easy. We went to Lowe’s, got a nice Moen, took off the old one (I broke it in the process… cheap plastic) and then screwed the new one in place. Being a homeowner is fun. I was tempted to put in a garbage disposal while I was at it, but I didn’t.
Next we have to replace the floor in the kitchen because of the old leaky faucet. Our water bill should go down too. ![]()
